Previous Topics
During the second half of Spring term, our learning was all themed around 'The Voyage of the Mystery'. We went on a trip to the National Maritime Museum, wrote letters as an explorer and learnt all about the voyage of The Mystery, a small lugger that sailed from Newlyn in Cornwall, all the way to Australia!

In the first half of the Spring term, our learning was themed around Maps and Mapping.
We wrote Quest stories inspired by our geography topic.  We went on a map reading trip around Truro.

In the second half of the autumn term our topic was Hinduism. We explored two big questions. First what do Hindus believe that God is like? Second, what does it mean to be a Hindu in Britain today? We identified some Hindu deities and say how they help Hindus describe God. We discovered links between some stories (e.g. Svetaketu, Ganesh, Diwali) and what Hindus believe about God. We used these stories to inspire our myths and legends writing in literacy.  For the second question we made links between beliefs about God and how Hindus live (e.g. choosing a deity and worshiping at a home shrine; celebrating Diwali.) We made some wonderful Hindu shrines in art. Our science topic was on light and shadow. We learned about light sources, how shadows work, keeping our eyes safe and how light works.

Our topic in the first half of the autumn term was  invaders and settlers. We learned all about how houses, homes and family life changed from Roman Britain to 1066.  Sutton Hoo? From ancient burial grounds to daring raids, our topic had something for everyone. Our museum artefacts gave children opportunities for hands on learning.  In literacy we kicked off with a Boggart adventure! Boggarts are magical, mythical creatures that happen to live in our Orchard! We created our very own Boggarts and writing descriptions of their characters and habitats, before planning their adventure. Once our Bogarts were tucked up in bed from their adventures, we moved onto Instruction writing – Viking style. We learned how to play a Viking game and write instructions to match. Finally, we invented our own games! In Science we learned about forces, friction and magnetic attraction. We began by making marble runs!
