Modern Foreign Languages

Children at Kea School are taught French in Years 3-6. Mrs McPherson teaches Years 3 and 4 and Mr Miles teaches Years 5 and 6.

French at Kea School is fun! . We try to make lessons as active and enjoyable as possible because we feel it helps children to feel enthusiastic about learning languages and the multi-sensory approach helps them to remember things more easily. We often play games, sing songs, draw pictures as well as having conversations and discussions in French and about the language. In Years 5 and 6, Mr Miles asks the children to write the names of things with the pronunciation next to it (the children have to think back to their phonics knowledge for this!) In Years 3 and 4, we think about word association, such as "le salon" for lounge; we thought about somebody having their hair done in the lounge! And for "un stylo" (pen) we thought about somebody always stealing it!
In Years 3 and 4, children learn to greet each other in French and ask and answer questions about how they are. They talk about the weather, colours, numbers, pets, family members, classroom items and much more! We also follow instructions in French and receive verbal and written praise in French.

In Years 5 and 6, children learn the basic colours, numbers, animals, talk about myself, where we live and places in town. We also try to link number work to numbers in French. We talk much more in sentences and try to remember some more French grammar than in Years 3 and 4. But French with Mr Miles is always fun!
